Rams hopeful Eric Weddle will be able to play vs. Saints

Eric Weddle left Sunday’s game against the Panthers after taking a scary blow to the head from Christian McCaffrey’s knee. Weddle was left bloodied and had to be carted off the field.

He did not return to the game, but later on, he tweeted that he’s “good as gold.” Sean McVay wasn’t as positive as Weddle when discussing the injury afterwards, saying he’s in the concussion protocol.

On Monday, McVay shared an update on Weddle. It was encouraging, but the veteran safety isn’t out of the woods yet.

“It’s the same. He was feeling good today. He has to go through the standard operating procedure as far as the concussion protocol,” McVay said. “He didn’t have any symptoms today, but he has to go through that process and that’s something we’ll have updates on as the week progresses.”

The Rams have a huge game coming up against the Saints on Sunday, a rematch of the NFC championship game. Los Angeles needs all hands on deck against New Orleans, but it’s not yet certain that Weddle will be available.

“I think we’re hopeful,” McVay said when asked if Weddle will play. “You respect the process that this concussion protocol entails. It’s always a positive sign when a player is asymptomatic, but there’s a lot of tests that he has to go through to get the thumbs up to go. You always have to have those contingency plans in place. I think we’re hopeful he’ll be able to check out, but he has to go through all that.”

Weddle was replaced by Marqui Christian at safety in the season opener after he left the game. Taylor Rapp also contributed, making a handful of key plays on defense.

The Rams are in good hands if Weddle can’t play, but they’re certainly a better team when he’s on the field.
