Rams hiring Navy assistant Joe Coniglio as OLBs coach

The Los Angeles Rams’ coaching staff is going to look fairly different in 2023 with all the changes Sean McVay is making to his group. After moving on from outside linebackers coach Thad Bogardus earlier this offseason, the Rams are filling the vacancy with a college coach.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Rams are hiring Navy assistant Joe Coniglio to be their outside linebackers coach. Coniglio just completed his second season at Navy, starting out as a defensive assistant in 2021 before transitioning to outside linebackers coach last year.

Navy announced that Coniglio would be their special teams coach in 2023 but the Rams came calling and lured him to LA.

“It’s been a dream and a goal of mine to coach in the NFL. I am getting the opportunity to be a position coach when I first get there, which does not happen often. I thought this was an opportunity I could not turn down,” Coniglio told the Sun.

McVay knows Coniglio well. The two of them were college roommates at Miami (Ohio) and remain good friends to this day. Coniglio told Navy head coach Brian Newberry that the Rams were the only job he’d even consider leaving for.

McVay and Coniglio played on the same team at Miami, with McVay playing wide receiver and Coniglio lining up at defensive end. Coniglio was even a two time All-MAC selection for Miami.
