Rams fall out of NFC West lead for first time since hiring Sean McVay

Sean McVay has had remarkable success since being hired by the Los Angeles Rams as their head coach in 2017. He made the playoffs twice, reached the Super Bowl and has posted the best record in the NFL over the last two seasons.

All of that has led to a comfortable position at the top of the NFC West for McVay and the Rams.

Since McVay took over in L.A., the Rams have never been anywhere but first place in the division. They’ve always had at least a share of the lead – until now.

Following the Rams’ loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at the Coliseum, they’re now alone in second place in the NFC West. The 49ers are 3-0, a half-game ahead of the 3-1 Rams and Seahawks.

It’s incredible that McVay was able to go this long with at least a share of the division lead, spanning 35 regular-season games. It’s possible the 49ers could fall back into a tie with the Rams next week as they’ll face the Browns on Monday Night Football.

The Rams also face the Seahawks on Thursday to open Week 5, which is a pivotal game for them. A loss paired with a 49ers win Monday would put the Rams a game behind Seattle and potentially 1.5 behind the 49ers after Week 5.
