Rams expected to release DeSean Jackson if they can’t trade him by deadline

DeSean Jackson was supposed to be the Rams’ deep threat this season. He was supposed to make big plays down the field and add some explosiveness to an offense that lacked speed last season.

But after seven weeks of only playing 100 snaps and catching eight passes, Jackson wants out. He and the Rams are trying to find a trade partner before today’s 4 p.m. ET deadline, though it’s not certain they’ll be able to get anything in return for Jackson.

If they can’t find a team to trade for him, the Rams are expected to release him, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

“He had permission on Friday to begin talking to teams about a potential trade,” Garafolo said on “Good Morning Football” Tuesday. “Does not sound like anything is bubbling up there but the two sides had a talk on Friday in which they decided to mutually part ways so you would expect this to end with Jackson’s release if they can’t find a trade partner by the end of the day. We’ll see how that goes.”

Jackson’s role hasn’t been what he expected it to be, playing fewer than 25 snaps in every game. He only played four snaps against the Lions and three against the Colts, too, and has been targeted just 15 times in the seven games he’s played.

The Rams held him out Sunday against the Texans as they searched for a trade partner, but it seems unlikely that they’re going to find someone to give up anything to acquire Jackson by 4 p.m. ET.
