Rams cutting Mark Barron gives Bengals another intriguing free-agent option

In a rather predictable turn of events, the Los Angeles Rams cut Mark Barron on Tuesday during the deadline to apply franchise tags on players.

And the Cincinnati Bengals could benefit.

The Rams had to make the move, as they couldn’t justify the cap hit:

Barron had a mediocre campaign this past season over the course of 12 games while working his way back from an Achilles injury, though he turned it around in the playoffs.

Now going on 30 years old next season, Barron would be a low-risk add for a Bengals team needing to carve out depth in the linebacker core. He’s a former first-round pick in 2012 with enough versatility to make a difference in a rotation, at least.

Assuming the Bengals don’t go after a big-name free agent and wait until the second or third wave to add players, Barron seems like a possible target. Zac Taylor, of course, should know quite a bit about Barron.
