Rams create $1.7M in cap space by restructuring Johnny Hekker’s contract

After handing out four-year extensions to Jared Goff and Tyler Higbee this week, the Los Angeles Rams decided to free up some cap space to accommodate those deals. According to Field Yates of ESPN, they’ve converted $2.25 million of Johnny Hekker’s base salary into a bonus, which created $1.69 million in cap space.

This is essentially a house-keeping move by the Rams, freeing up some much-needed money. According to Over The Cap, the Rams had just $1.9 million in cap space prior to this restructure, which was the fifth-fewest in the NFL.

Even with the added $1.69 million, the Rams are close to the cap and have very little money to spend. Fortunately, there are ways to create space, like restructuring contracts, waiving players and signing others to extensions.
