Rams checking out Maryland safety Darnell Savage with pre-draft visit

With Lamarcus Joyner on his way out, the Los Angeles Rams got in front of his departure by signing Eric Weddle to a two-year deal. The veteran is a short-term solution at a position of need, but he can’t be expected to stick around longer than the length of his contract.

For that reason, the Rams could still look to draft a safety next month as a future replacement for Weddle. One player who makes sense is Maryland safety Darnell Savage, who’s rising up draft boards after his combine performance.

The Rams are looking into the former Terrapin by hosting him for an official pre-draft visit, which each team is allowed 30 of. It’s unclear if the meeting took place already or will be held in the future.

Via Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic:

Savage ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash in Indianapolis, while also posting a 7.03 in the three-cone drill and 4.14 in the short shuttle. His 40 time was the second-fastest among all safeties, while the other two times were about average for players at his position.

He can play deep safety or cover the slot, which is a valuable asset to have in the NFL. He’s not the biggest safety, though, at just 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds. The Rams are no strangers to shorter safeties, as Joyner was well undersized for the position.

Savage won’t be a first-round pick, but he could be someone for Los Angeles to target in Round 3.
