Rampur Sessions Court Pronounces Verdict, No Relief For Azam Khan

Azam Khan (File)

Rampur: The Sessions Court on Thursday granted no relief to Azam Khan while delivering its verdict. Consequently Azam Khan remains disqualified as MLA.

Azam Khan had filed an appeal in the district and sessions court a day ago after the Supreme Court directed the lower court to hear and decide by Thursday the appeal, requesting his conviction to be put on hold.

Earlier, the Rampur court had on October 27 sentenced Mr Khan to three years jail in the hate speech case of 2019.

Following his conviction, he was disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly under provisions of the Representation of the People Act.

The Assembly secretariat had then declared his Rampur Sadar seat vacant.

The Election Commission has already announced bypoll in the Rampur Sadar constituency seat on December 5.
