Rambling pensioners get lost and end up on busy dual-carriageway

Nine pensioners were rescued after they got lost on a rambling holiday and ended up on a busy dual carriageway. Sally Morgan, 69, was on a walking holiday in Bath in Somerset with her local rambling group

But instead of ending of a nice walk back to their hotel - they ended up on the side of the A36. There had been miscommunication with the bus driver, who thought they wanted to get off next to the dual carriageway - but instead they wanted to get off in the town centre.

The panicked pensioners got off the bus and as the road has no pavement, they were forced to walk alongside the road. Luckily, they came across a house and were rescued to safety and taken back to the hotel by a man known as 'Mr Bailey.'

Sally said that she and the other women all felt 'very worried as it's a very fast road.' She said: "We was very relieved that Mr Bailey was there to help us.

"When our friends came in their car to get us, they took three of us and Mr Bailey took four of us, which was nice of him, and then our friends came back for me and another one of us. By the time we got picked up, Mr Bailey's wife had come home and I told her he was helping damsels in distress and she said he would like that.

"He was a very kind man."

Pam Morgan, 77, who organised the trip, said the thought of nine pensioners stuck on the side of the road was quite frightening.'

She said: "Mr Bailey was very kind, and it was very fortunate that he was home as that road is known for being really fast and it's not very wide as it's not got pavements. The walkers were tucking themselves in as the traffic was zipping past them.

"We want to thank Mr Bailey for saving damsels in distress and he was truly a saint because I just don't know what would have happened because there was no path off or anything that they could have gone down that they could see.

"They were just quite scared on the side of the road and apparently it is a fast road."
