Ramblers group enjoy historic sites in Lanarkshire

The Biggar Ramblers recently took on a fascinating walk where they enjoyed some stunning views of Lanarkshire.

The group of 15 members met on March 31 to take in the bright Spring sunshine in a hike around Forth.

The walkers followed the path out of the village on the Mill Dykes road, enjoying panoramic views of the Lanarkshire countryside before taking a detour to view a series of ponds with reed beds.

These act as a natural filtration system to remove iron and other impurities from the Mouse Water burn.

The group returned to the road and crossed a burn on a walkers bridge and headed for Wilsontown.

At Wilsontown Church the group turned onto a path through a picturesque glen and stopped for an enjoyable coffee break in a sheltered glade.

Arriving at the main destination of Wilsontown Ironworks, the group took in the historical site and its interesting findings.

It was Scotland’s first major ironworks which had employed and housed 2000 people in the early 19th century.

Although the buildings had largely disappeared, there were well marked pathways and good information boards to evoke what a major site this must have been in its time.

Following their exploration, the group had a picnic lunch by the entrance before a short walk past Wilsontown church back to Forth - a pleasant and informative day for everyone who participated.
