Ram-raiders target convenience store in East Kilbride for second time in two years

A newsagents in East Kilbride has been ram-raided for the second time in two years.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a silver coloured Toyota RAV4 deliberately smashed into the shutters of the Lifestyle Express in Leeward Circle, Westwood, in the early hours of this morning, reports the East Kilbride News.

A number of items were then stolen from the shop.

Police in Cambuslang are continuing enquiries following the incident which happened at around 2.30am.

The car then drove off and is believed to be followed by a small dark coloured car.

At around 2.50am, the silver Toyota car crashed in Vermont Road, Glasgow and the suspect fled from the scene. He is described as having short, dark shaven hair.

Detective Sergeant Stewart Walton, of Cambuslang CID said: “We are currently trying to establish the exact circumstances of this incident and the connection between both cars.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have information on either the ram-raid incident or the crash later on or anyone who has dashcam footage of either incident.”

The latest incident comes two years after a similar attack on the shop.

Stunned shopkeeper Sirfraz Iqba spoke of his anger after the brazen ram-raiders smashed through his front doors in a bid to steal a cash machine.

His shutters were bent double and the front doors taken clean off their hinges. The ATM machine was dragged halfway across the shop floor but the raiders failed to make off with any cash.

Two men had ploughed a dark-coloured Land Rover Discovery into the store at 2.50am in January 2017.

The same vehicle, which was later dumped and set alight, was used in two other raids elsewhere in Lanarkshire.

Anyone with information should contact Cambuslang CID via telephone number 101 quoting incident number 0248 of 18 December 2019. Alternatively calls can be made anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
