Tiffany Sloane Square: Ram-raiders launch smash-and-grab at west London jewellers

Ram-raiders launched a smash-and-grab at luxury jewellery store Tiffany's in west London today.

The suspects, who escaped with tens of thousands of pounds worth of gems, had ploughed a van into the front of the Sloane Street store in the early hours.

Accomplices on mopeds then stole jewellery from the shop.

The raiders fled, while the van was left at the scene at the junction with Sloane Square.

Police were called just before 3am. No arrests have been made.

Pictures from the scene on Friday morning showed a smashed display table inside the store.

Officers remained at the scene, with the front window still hanging in its frame.

A number of footprints were also visible on the pavement.

The raid comes just over a month after raiders used a van to smash their way into a Chanel store in the same street, escaping with thousands of pounds worth of designer goods.

In a similar method of operation, a van driver smashed through the front window of Chanel before allowing gang members on mopeds to swoop in and raid the shelves before they escaped.

Today investment banker Jason King, 50, said the Tiffany & Co store had been targeted in a raid a few years ago.

He said: “That time they went through the front of the building, this time the side. It’s certainly not the first time.

“Obviously, there is no fear of getting caught and criminals do what they like. It’s sad.”

Passer-by Nicole Cantwell, 55, a teacher from Chelsea, said: “It’s awful to see what they’ve done to Tiffany & Co just for jewellery.

“When is all this crime in London going to stop? I’ve lived here all my life and this is the worst I’ve seen it. I hope they catch them.”

In 2005 a suspected thief died in a police chase after detectives foiled a ram raid on Tiffany’s.

The Met is appealing for information, urging people to call 101 - quoting reference CAD 0671 of April 26 - or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
