Ralph Hassenhuttl reveals Chelsea's 'big' transfer plans amid Kai Havertz and Jadon Sancho links

Southampton head coach Ralph Hassenhuttl has opened up on Chelsea's transfer plans this summer, as they close in on RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign the Germany international, with a five-year deal expected to be offered to the forward.

Werner's arrival at Stamford Bridge would add to the capture of midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who agreed a move from Ajax in February, and will officially complete his transfer next month.

But Chelsea are understood to be in the market for further reinforcements to their squad, with Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell another key target.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is another player on the Blues' radar, but Frank Lampard's side would likely face stiff competition from Manchester United.

There is also speculation that Chelsea have opened talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz.

Havertz has enjoyed an excellent season in Germany, with his performances attracting interest from a host of top European clubs.

According to The Mail, the Blues have stepped up their interest by entering discussions for the £89million-rated star.

And amid the numerous links, Hassenhuttl appeared to confirm Chelsea's ambitious plans.

“I always struggle with these figures," he told SportBild. "Chelsea have big plans and have to win titles again. And strikers who score at the front cost a lot of money.

“It was not normal for us [RB Leipzig in 2016] to get him at the time for €10m. After that, many were annoyed when he developed so well.”

The Austrian also explained what Chelsea fans can expect from Werner next season, if he completes his move to Stamford Bridge.

Hassenhuttl managed the forward for two seasons during his stint as Leipzig boss, with the striker scoring 42 goals and registering 17 assists in all competitions during that period.

“A very physical player, good on one-on-one," he told German outlet SportBild. "What they don’t like here are players who roll away or act. Football is very intense and fast.

"This in turn suits Timo: With his speed he is a brutal weapon in the right team.

“Timo is a player who needs a shoulder to lean on, or a little more encouragement. But what I always liked about him is that he scores goals that nobody else scores.

“Give him some space and it’s hard to stop him. Getting through elsewhere as a striker is only difficult if you don’t immediately show that you have qualities. But I’m not worried about him at all.”
