Ralph Hasenhuttl gives update on pursuit of Manchester United defender Brandon Williams

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has provided an update on his side's protracted loan move for Manchester United defender Brandon Williams.

The Saints are keen to bring in Williams to add to their defensive depth at full-back, with only Kyle Walker-Peters and new signing Romain Perraud as senior options following the departure of Ryan Bertrand this summer on a free transfer.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move to St Mary's Stadium for the last three transfer windows but a move has never quite materialised. This summer however the deal seems more likely than ever, with Manchester United chasing a new option at right-back which would make Williams the fifth-choice full-back at the club.

A deal is yet to be agreed though, despite all parties seemingly wanting it to happen, and Hasenhuttl has given an update on the club's transfer business.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, via the Daily Echo, the Austrian coach said; “At the moment on the transfer market, nobody has money.

“Everybody wants the most money for his players when they sell so it keeps everything on hold. Therefore, a lot of players are letting their contracts run out and leave without money.

"This money is what smaller clubs are missing, it’s going out of football somewhere else, I don’t know, in the pockets of agents or wherever. This situation is not good for no league in the world."

When asked specifically about Williams' situation, Hasenhuttl remained tight lipped.

"It’s interesting that you name this player, normally you don’t. It was a nice try to be honest!”

Williams was given the nod from the start in Manchester United's first pre-season fixture of the summer, starting at left-back ahead of Alex Telles in the 2-1 win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. He was one of nine substitutions made at half-time however, so his inclusion from the start shouldn't be looked into too much.
