Ralph Hasenhuttl admits Danny Ings injury fear after Southampton win Aston Villa thriller

Ralph Hasenhuttl is sweating over the fitness of Danny Ings after the England striker suffered a knee injury in Southampton's 4-3 victory at Aston Villa.

Ings scored the Saints' fourth goal of the afternoon but required treatment late in the match and was substituted in the 85th minute.

The 28-year-old has already netted five goals in the opening seven games of the season and a spell on the sidelines would come as a major blow to Southampton.

In his post-match press conference, Saints boss Hasnehuttl was clearly concerned about the extent of the injury, which occurred just in front of him.

Ings was substituted off in the 85th minute after going down clutching his knee (PA)

He said: "It was such a hard game, maybe it (the match) was too tough at times.

"Ingsy's (injury) doesn't look good. It was right by me and we know his history with his knee."

Ings previously suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee and a serious injury to his right knee while at Liverpool and spent a total of 18 months on the sidelines.

Hasenhuttl confirmed the striker - who scored 22 league goals last campaign - will undergo a scan tomorrow to discover the extent of the injury.

He added: "Danny was immediately shouting 'my knee, my knee!' It doesn't look good."

The Southampton boss also confirmed Ryan Bertrand and Jan Bednarek picked up injuries in the Premier League tie - but a thrilling win in the Midlands gave some cause for cheer.

The Saints surged to a 4-0 lead at Villa Park thanks to Jannik Vestergaard's header, two free-kicks by James Ward-Prowse and Ings' strike.

But they were given a late scare as Villa rallied, with Tyrone Mings pulling one back after a corner, while Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish struck in added time.

The result moves Southampton to third in the table, while Villa slipped to sixth after their impressive start to the season has been brought to an abrupt end with back-to-back defeats.
