Ralf Rangnick set to act on Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd transfer recommendation

Ralf Rangnick could begin his reign as Manchester United boss by taking the transfer advice of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson may have departed Old Trafford in 2013, but the former United boss is still very much involved with the club, and continues to put forward players that would improve the Red Devils.

Rangnick will take charge of United until the end of the season while the board find a suitable long-term replacement, but the German is still set to receive substantial funds in January to improve his side.

Well renowned for his high-intensity style of play, one recommendation from Ferguson stands out to fit the gegenpressing era at United.

United are in need of midfield reinforcements due to a lack of depth in the middle of the park, as well as the imminent departure of Paul Pogba, and Amadou Haidara could be brought in as a replacement from Rangnick's former club, RB Leipzig.

However, Ferguson wants to see Aston Villa and Scotland star John McGinn at Old Trafford, and the midfielder has been on United's watch list since 2019, according to SunSport.

With Donny van de Beek, Jesse Lingard and Pogba potentially heading for the exit door, McGinn has remained on United's watch list and Ferguson is still a huge fan of the Scotland international.

In fact, the scout that recommended McGinn to Villa, Bobby Jenks, claimed that Ferguson was unimpressed his old side didn’t land him sooner, and was disappointed when they didn't sign him in 2019 either.

Jenks told The Athletic: "What I do know is that Sir Alex Ferguson is wondering why Manchester United let a talented Scottish boy slip through. He’ll be keeping a close eye on him that’s for sure and if he continues the way he is, you can bet he’ll be telling his pals at United, too."

McGinn has impressed in recent years, and his ability on the ball and calmness under pressure is something that will attract the attention of Rangnick.

The Villa star has just one goal to his name so far this season, but has provided three assists during a difficult period at Villa Park, as they struggle to deal with life after Jack Grealish.

The midfielder won't come cheap though, and even in 2019 Villa wanted £50m for the Scotland international, before McGinn signed a new deal last December.

McGinn now has three and a half years remaining on his current deal, and new boss Steven Gerrard will be reluctant to let his star go, especially to United should the Liverpool legend still hold a grudge against his former rivals.

Rangnick may favour a move for McGinn regardless, especially due to his Premier League experience, and it'll also land him in a good light with Ferguson.
