Ralf Rangnick's sent great Manchester United challenge as appointment looms

Andrei Kanchelskis believes the job on Ralf Rangnick's hands ahead of his impending Manchester United arrival is a "great challenge".

The German has agreed to a six-month deal to manage United until the end of May before moving into a consultancy role but he won't be in the dugout for the trip to Stamford Bridge after work permit issues, the Manchester Evening News understands.

His move would see him depart his position at Lokomotiv Moscow, but the 52-year-old ex- United winger says the Russians should be wishing him luck for his move.

Michael Carrick will continue for the trip to the capital after leading the Reds to the Champions League knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Villarreal on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old has been praised for helping establish TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga with the latter coming through the German league structure despite their formation being just 12 years ago.

Rangnick faces a difficult task with United as they sit 12 points off league leaders, and Sunday's opponents, Chelsea but are still within touching distance of the Champions League places with the gap standing at six points.

His first game could be against Arsenal next Thursday as Mikel Arteta's side visit Old Trafford with an element of confidence after a good run of form.

The Gunners are now above the Reds despite a terrible start to the season that saw them at the foot of the Premier League table, but a spell of wins, accompanied by the humbling to Liverpool last weekend, they have the top four in their sights.

Kanchelskis spent four seasons at Old Trafford and believes the opportunity for the German is a "great challenge", insisting that those connected to Lokomotiv Moscow shouldn't feel aggrieved by his decision.

"If Ralf is invited, then in England he is known and followed by his work. This is a great challenge. Who would refuse to go to United to work?" He told Championat.

“Everyone would leave. We must wish Rangnick good luck.”
