Ralf Rangnick's impact behind the scenes at Man Utd as he compiles three-man shortlist

Ralf Rangnick is already making a huge impact behind the scenes at Manchester United.

The German was faced with the difficult task of replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick who the players had the utmost respect for, but the early signs suggest he is filling that void.

The squad are taking to his philosophy and style of play despite the fact he's only been on charge for less than a fortnight with an encouraging performance against Crystal Palace last weekend as United claimed a 1-0 win.

But the interim boss is also making a big impression off the field with the way he is communicating with the players and staff, reports GQ.

United's stars have been soaking up everything he has to say. They were disappointed to see Solskjaer go but are ready to hear his new ideas.

Rangnick has played down the possibility of a busy January in the transfer market despite reports claiming the Red Devils are looking at a midfielder.

ESPN state the 63-year-old has compiled a three-man shortlist of RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara, Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips - urging Old Trafford chiefs to take a closer look at the trio.

United's issues in the middle of the park have been well documented this season as they failed to secure the signing of Eduardo Camavinga who joined Real Madrid.

Rangnick insists they won't spend money for the sake of it, however, as he understands January is a notoriously hard window to do business in.

But if the right opportunity presents itself, they are willing to act on it.

He said: "My opinion on winter transfers is clear. It needs to be a player who improves the quality, who helps the team to get better. It needs to be a high quality player, no matter which area of the pitch.

"On the other hand, it needs to be a player who, if they were available in the summer, they’re available for similar conditions in the winter. Then it might make sense. It needs to be the right mentality as well as the right quality.

"For this competitive league, we need the best possible mentality. He needs to be mature enough, have a winning mentality, and for me the mentality in this league is even more crucial than in any other league in Europe."
