Ralf Rangnick's comments offer subtle hint at his thoughts on the 'Man Utd way'

Ralf Rangnick insists Manchester United's ethos under him will be to win and control games.

The German took charge for the first time at the weekend as he presided over a 1-0 success against Crystal Palace.

Rangnick, who replaced the axed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, arrived in England with a hugely impressive reputation.

In his homeland he has led the way in developing the footballing philosophy that has helped inspire the likes of Jurgen Klopp.

That will have had some United fans purring following a difficult spell that saw results hard to come by.

The Old Trafford faithful - as well as several ex-players - have an expectation of how the team should operate on the pitch.

Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson both played in a way that excited the crowd, but managers since the Scot have been accused of doing quite the opposite.

Rangnick, who is currently seeing them team through until this season ends, is now tasked with turning around the club's fortunes.

He has stated his desire to play in a certain way, but winning will be the priority before any stylistic perks.

"Of course, Young Boys can still qualify for the Europa League, and they already beat us [in Bern]. So it's a big game for them, particularly, on Wednesday night?" he told the United website.

“Yes, they are under pressure, more than we are. Result-wise, we are not under pressure, but our ethos is to win games, and we want to play in a way that we still dominate the game.

"In the end, it's about winning. It's not about just playing nice football or intensive football. It's about winning.

"So again, the players who will play, they will want to win the game, and maybe then, in a way, also make up for the defeat in the first round [of games].”

Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, two men who have led United in the post-Ferguson era, were criticised for their styles of play in Manchester.

The pair both claimed trophies with Mourinho's Europa League success in 2017 the club's most recent trophy.

Solskjaer, a man who played under Ferguson, attempted to play more on the front foot and utilise the club's academy during his tenure.

However the Norwegian left without winning any silverware amid several near misses in semi-finals and a final.

Rangnick may have a limited time in which to convey his ideas, which could hamper his ability to implement certain aspects of his philosophy.

As a result he may look to simply get the best out of what he has at his disposal, regardless of how many plaudits it wins.
