Ralf Rangnick reveals phone calls with Manchester United owner Joel Glazer and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ralf Rangnick had a one-and-a-half hour conversation with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after he agreed to become the interim manager of Manchester United.

Solskjaer was sacked after United were eliminated from the League Cup and then battered 4-2 by Leicester, 5-0 by Liverpool, 2-0 by Manchester City, and 4-1 by Watford within the space of five weeks.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick arrested United's slump by guiding them to wins over Villarreal and Arsenal, as well as a draw with Chelsea during his three games in charge, but United have still only won two of their last nine games and are 10 points behind third-placed Liverpool.

Rangnick is contracted as interim manager until the end of the season and is then due to start a two-year consultancy role but he has not held in-depth discussions with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward or football director John Murtough.

Rangnick spoke to co-chairman Joel Glazer before a lengthier chat with Solskjaer, despite the Norwegian's disastrous end to his tenure.

"We haven’t spoken about that in detail in all the conversations we had with John and also with Ed," Rangnick clarified. "But especially with John.

"I also had a long phone call with Joel Glazer for more than half an hour. I also spoke with Ole last Sunday before the Chelsea game for almost two hours. He was very generous to spend one-and-a-half hours on the phone with me, telling me his insight and details about the team.

"But, as I said, with all those people we haven’t spoken about what will happen in the next two years from next summer until summer 2024. We only spoke about the current situation and how we can find a way to work together."
