Ralf Rangnick responds to Cristiano Ronaldo interview criticising his Manchester United appointment

Ralf Rangnick has distanced himself from Cristiano Ronaldo's criticism of his interim appointment at Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November last year and Rangnick was appointed as his successor on an interim basis, with the club also confirming the German would take up a consultancy role for a further two years after the season had ended.

However, Rangnick failed to improve performances during his time as interim manager and his consultancy role was eventually scrapped. United recorded their lowest Premier League points total of all time and he departed from the club.

Rangnick was appointed Austria's national team manager in late April and he's been forced to reiterate that he is solely concentrating on that position this week after receiving scathing criticism from Ronaldo, who has been interviewed by Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo said: "After sacking Ole, they bring sport director Ralf Rangnick in. It's something nobody understood. It surprised me. If you’re not even a coach, how are you going to be the boss of Manchester United? I’d never even heard of him."

Rangnick was asked about Ronaldo's comments and responded: “I’m the team boss of Austria’s national team, it’s not my job to judge that. (It’s) the job of Manchester United and the sports journalists."

The 64-year-old had most recently coached RB Leipzig in 2019 until his failed interim appointment at United.
