Ralf Rangnick: Manchester United interim boss granted work permit and will take charge against Crystal Palace

Ralf Rangnick will take charge of Manchester United for the first time against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The German was confirmed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s interim managerial successor on Monday on a deal until the end of the season, after which he will take on a consultancy role until 2024.

Rangnick was obviously not involved in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Chelsea with his appointment yet to be announced, while he will also be absent from Thursday’s clash with Arsenal as caretaker boss Michael Carrick takes charge for the third and final time after also stepping up at Stamford Bridge and in the Champions League win over Villarreal.

However, Rangnick - who has yet to speak to Carrick - has now been granted a work permit to start his United tenure and will be in the dugout when Patrick Vieira’s Palace visit Manchester on Sunday afternoon after being restricted to a purely watching brief against the Gunners.

The ex-RB Leipzig, Schalke and Hoffenheim coach will face the media for the first time in an in-person press conference to be held at 9am GMT at Old Trafford on Friday morning.

“I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club. The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience,” Rangnick said earlier this week after leaving his sports and development role at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow.

“All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team. Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.”
