Ralf Rangnick makes Everton claim in his first Manchester United press conference

New Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has explained the role Everton played in growing his love for English football.

The German has taken over for the rest of the campaign at Old Trafford following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this month, taking the reins after a brief temporary spell with Michael Carrick in charge.

The former RB Leipzig boss has been linked with a litany of Premier League positions in recent years, including the role at Goodison Park on a number of occasions.

Rangnick has signed a deal which will see him spend six months on the Manchester United touchline, before moving to a consultancy role for the following two years.

And, in his first press conference with the club, he has shared his first experiences of football in this country - including making long trips from Brighton to watch Everton in the 1980s.

He said: "As you all know, when I was a young student I studied English at university to become an English teacher, English and P.E.

"Back in the late 70s and early 80s I lived in Brighton, and since then I fell in love with English football.

"In the early 80s I took the fast train from Brighton to Victoria station and watched, every three days, a home game in Highbury and the old White Hart Lane - or even in Liverpool I went to Goodison.

"Since then I have always very much cherished the way that teams are being supported. I think this is absolutely unique.

"For me it's more than exciting to now be part of that atmosphere. This should help any team, and especially our players, to get on track and play at the highest possible level."

Rangnick will take charge of United for the first time when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, having been in the stands for their 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Thursday in Carrick's final game in temporary charge.
