Ralf Rangnick learns Man Utd January transfer budget as he takes in new Old Trafford home

New Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has been given a guided tour of Old Trafford and will be there to watch his side face Arsenal.

Work visa issues prevented Rangnick from taking charge of his first game tonight, but United are hopeful their interim boss will be in the dug-out for Sunday's visit of Crystal Palace.

Rangnick, 63, was given a tour of the Theatre of Dreams by United Football Director John Murtough, who contacted the German to take over for an interim spell in the wake of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's sacking.

As well as being given a tour of the famous stadium, Rangnick checked out the Old Trafford pitch and met staff, and is understood to have also visited United's Carrington training complex.

The United board have faith in Rangnick to turn their season around and are ready to hand the German coach up to £100million in January to strengthen his squad.

Former RB Leipzig boss Rangnick could raid his old club for midfield duo Amadou Haidara and Christopher Nkunku in January, while Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland is a summer target.

Rangnick was sporting director at RB Salzburg when prolific striker Haaland came to prominence, before he was sold to Dortmund for £18million at the start of 2020.

Given his close relationship with Haaland's father, former Leeds and Manchester City midfielder Alf -Inge, United are hopeful Rangnick can give them an edge in the race to sign Haaland.

The Norway striker, 21, has a £63m release clause in his contract, which comes into effect next summer, and which will herald a scramble for his signature among Europe's top clubs.

For now, however, everyone who is associated with United will be fully focused on Thursday's crucial home clash against rivals Arsenal.

Michael Carrick will remain in the Old Trafford dug-out for that contest, the former Red Devils midfielder revealing he is yet to have any contact with Rangnick ahead of the German's transition into the hot-seat.

Pressed on whether he had communicated with his successor, Carrick explained: “No, because of the process and work permit, we haven't been able to.

“So we've carried on It's worked well the last two games and hopefully will tomorrow.

“I haven't really got anything to update you on, other than the work permit process is ongoing as we speak and I'm in this position, as I was for Villarreal and Chelsea, getting the boys ready for the game tomorrow night.”

Carrick went on to concede he has been stretched for time since taking over from Solskjaer, claiming: "A lot has happened in the last week to 10 days."
