Ralf Rangnick hints Manchester United formation change may happen on one condition

Ralf Rangnick admits he has considered changing the formation to a back three at Manchester United.

The German coach is still looking at ways to improve his side after an indifferent start to life as interim manager at Old Trafford, in which United have struggled to control matches.

Rangnick tasted defeat for the first time last week when United lost to Wolves in the Premier League, a result which had been on the cards after unconvincing performances against Norwich and Newcastle in previous outings.

United's interim manager has hinted he could look to change defensive shape in the weeks ahead, but warns a switch to a back three will only work if they have most of their centre-backs available for selection.

"Well, I think most teams have their system in England and they stick to it," Rangnick told club media.

"But there are also teams who switch from a back three to a back four, or from a back four to a back three, or even like Bayern Munich, for example, or Leipzig also did it last season with Julian Nagelsmann, even if they play defensively in a back four, they try to rotate within this system, this formation, to a little bit of an asymmetric back three.

"I think with our team, we have those two options, in order to play with a back three, we need to have most of our centre-backs available, I think even under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], the team did it, for example in games like Tottenham, Atalanta away, or against Manchester City, in the derby.

"I think we can play in the back three, this could be an option for us, but, as I said, it also depends on the players available, on the current shape and form of the players and also, to a certain extent, to the team against which we are playing."
