Ralf Rangnick has compared Manchester United target Wout Weghorst to a Liverpool FC legend

Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has previously compared transfer target Wout Weghorst with Liverpool legend Ian Rush, waxing lyrical about his technical ability.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United are interested in signing Weghorst on loan for the remainder of the season to strengthen their attacking options. The Netherlands international is currently on loan at Turkish side Besiktas from Championship table-toppers Burnley.

The striker joined the Turkish giants on a season-long loan deal back in July following Burnley's relegation from the Premier League. He had joined the Clarets just a few months earlier, signing on the final day of the 2022 January transfer window from Wolfsburg for a reported fee of £12million.

The Clarets invested in Weghorst, who scored twice for the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar, as they believed he was the man that could help them stave off the threat of relegation. However, he scored just two goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

Although his record for Burnley was nothing to write home about, he did produce a very impressive assist during United's 1-1 draw at Turf Moor last season. After taking a first-half lead through Paul Pogba, the Reds were pegged back immediately after the restart when Jay Rodriguez latched onto Weghorst's excellent pass to earn the Clarets a point.

Ahead of the trip to Turf Moor, Rangnick, who left United back in May, was quizzed about Weghorst, who had only just joined Burnley, and he hailed his individual talent. Rangnick, of course, knew all about the Dutchman because of his strong knowledge of German football.

"He looks with his size, a little bit like Ian Rush, for example, but he's a very technical player," said Rangnick speaking almost a year ago. "Due to his size, he is also physically present but he's not that much of a physical target striker. He is more of a technical player.

"Also, he had good times at Wolfsburg when Oliver Glasner was head coach, he did extremely well and scored quite a few goals. I thought he was a good signing and one of the best possible signings to replace [Chris] Wood."
