Ralf Rangnick has already detailed what happened when he met Man Utd great Sir Alex Ferguson

Ralf Rangnick has previously detailed his meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson, with the German now on the verge of being named Manchester United interim manager.

He managed at Old Trafford in the 2010-11 season when he was in charge of Schalke in a Champions League semi-final against United, which Sir Alex's side won, comfortably.

Following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking, Michael Carrick has been in temporary charge as United searched for an interim manager until the end of the season before appointing a permanent head coach in the summer.

Mauricio Pochettino remains the preferred choice to be the next permanent manager at Old Trafford and the club hierarchy will be continuing the pursuit of the Paris Saint-Germain manager at the end of the campaign.

During the 2010-11 season, United were battling across multiple fronts as Ferguson tried to replicate another multi-title winning season. Although they did win the Premier League, they narrowly missed out on European glory after defeat to Pep Guardiola's Barcelona at Wembley.

But it was in the last four where he met the man who is set to be the next Reds boss.

Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney scored two important away goals in Gelsenkirchen following the second leg, Rangnick spoke highly of Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

“He [Sir Alex Ferguson] asked if we could have a drink together after the press conference - we'll see how long this all takes," he told UEFA.com in 2011.

“You can't afford this on such a [high] level and then the game took another direction. You have to say Manchester United were too good for us, we were hitting our limits."

An Anderson brace and goals from Darron Gibson and Antonio Valencia inflicted a heavy scoreline on the German side, but it didn't stop the tactician being in awe of the giant that Sir Alex Ferguson had created.

Rangnick had taken over at the VELTINS-Arena following the sacking of fierce German tactician Felix Magath and tasked with steering the Royal Blues up the table.

Ultimately, the German - lauded for his philosophy on football - led them to a famous win over Inter Milan and helped them to the DFB Pokal, Schalke's last honour, before departing.

He has since managed RB Leipzig on two separate occasions before stints as director in Leipzig, Salzburg and Brazil prior to his role at Lokomotiv Moscow.
