Ralf Rangnick discusses Manchester United goalkeeper plans ahead of January transfer window

Ralf Rangnick admits Manchester United could be open to letting a goalkeeper leave on loan in the January transfer window.

The Manchester Evening News revealed this week that Ajax are interested in loaning Dean Henderson next month and the 24-year-old is determined to play regularly in the second half of the season.

Henderson, 24, made just his second start of the season in the midweek Champions League draw with Young Boys, as Tom Heaton also emerged for his United debut.

Heaton, 35, rejoined United in the expectation he would be the number two goalkeeper but Henderson contracted Covid-19 in July so David de Gea started the season and Henderson was not considered for selection until after the summer transfer window had closed.

Fourth-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant is contracted to United until the end of the season and academy 'keeper Matej Kovar was on the bench against Young Boys. Kovar was on loan at Swindon in League One last season before he was recalled in January due to a lack of playing time.

Rangnick indicated if Henderson were to be allowed to leave he could want to recruit experienced cover as Grant is 38 and has not played in more than two years.

"We have quite a few top goalkeepers and also we could see that against Young Boys," Rangnick said. "Both goalkeepers did well who played. With David de Gea, we have a top goalkeeper as number one.

"This is a position where we have a minimum three, if not four or five good goalkeepers, and we will see what the situation will be like in the winter.

"There might be one or two of them want to go on loan but we have to bear in mind we have three competitions in the next six months: FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League, and we definitely need three top goalkeepers in order to make up for a player being injured or suspended."
