Ralf Rangnick discusses interest in vacant Manchester United technical director job

Former RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick has revealed it would "take a lot" to lure him away from his current job amid Manchester United's search for a technical director.

The MEN understood that United were eager to appoint a technical director before their Premier League opener against Chelsea, but ultimately failed to do so.

United want their inaugural technical director to chair a committee, likely made up of former players, who would recommend transfer targets and take decisions on current players' futures.

Rangnick was in the stands watching on as United beat Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day of the season.

The 61-year-old is held in high regard and was once considered a candidate for the England job. His success in the transfer market has been astonishing, securing the signings of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Timo Werner to name a few.

As a result, he has been linked with the vacant role at United but admitted it would take an amazing offer for him to consider joining the scouting setup at Old Trafford.

Questioned whether he would be interested in the job, he told The Times: "I am happy in my current job and it would take a lot to lure me away right now.

“There is a lot of space for a vision for United, but I am very happy where I am."

Rangnick is currently the head of sport and development at Leipzig, developing their teams in both Brazil and New York.

Despite keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the speculation over his future, the German offered some key advice to the United hierarchy over signing players.

He added: "Since Sir Alex [Ferguson] left they were underperforming. They haven’t won the title since he left.

"At any club, if you cannot get the right players, then you should at least not sign the wrong ones. You are in trouble if you do that in one or two or three consecutive transfer windows.

"Club building is about building the right squad by transferring the right players away and having more than 50 per cent success rate of bringing in the right players. Then you must have the best possible coaches to develop these players."
