Ralf Rangnick can repeat Marcus Rashford trick to solve Manchester United transfer headache

It's not often that Manchester United are out of the news these days, and manager Ralf Rangnick had some exciting things to say in his latest press conference.

United have been preparing themselves for a crucial third-round FA Cup tie against Aston Villa, which feels like a must-win game to silence the doubters.

Rangnick and his team have come under immense scrutiny since the 1-0 Premier League defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford, which has resulted in reports about dressing room discontent and a lack of unity inside the player camp.

You'd have to say some of the critics have been necessary. After all, some players look like they don't care and lack a desire to play for the club. While we've seen the likes of Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Fred come out to express their commitment; there are others who don't feel the same way as them.

United needs a complete reshape to their squad and certain people need to leave. At the same time, others will have to replace them, and one position where the club have been lacking is in the central midfield department. However, Rangnick said he might have to work with the players he has, seeing as the club looks unlikely to strengthen in the January transfer window.

"It doesn't help if there is a profile missing," Rangnick said.

"We need to work and want to work with the players we have. We have shown we are able to keep clean sheets with these players but it's also what we're doing with the ball and without the ball.

It's clear to both Rangnick and United supporters that there's a gaping hole in the middle of the park. There doesn't seem to be a desire from those at the top to go out and bring a new player in the winter market. I firmly believe that if United doesn't solve the issue, even temporarily, it could come back to haunt them this month.

However, there also could be a win-win situation, which solves the problem for all parties involved.

It can be understood why United would be unwilling to spend money for an interim manager because it doesn't make much sense from a business point of view. But, if Rangnick acts smartly, he might be able to pull off a clever transfer trick.

The FA Cup always draws up some big surprises, and one person who I think surprised the football world was Nottingham Forest midfielder James Garner.

Garner, 20, is on loan at Forest from United and has been sensational for Steve Cooper's team this season, being the conductor in the heart of midfield.

A holding midfielder, Garner has won critics for controlling the tempo of a football match whilst also bearing defensive duties in his role as a number six.

Forest's 1-0 victory over Arsenal impressed everyone, and while United fans weren't shocked at Garner's performance, the rest of football was.

To put it simply, he was sensational and one of the better performers in a red shirt!

As per @StatmanDave, Garner won 100% of his aerial duels and three ground duels, had a 76 per cent pass accuracy, made six ball recoveries, three clearances, two interceptions and 41 ball touches.

As we can see from his heat map, Garner often occupied spaces in deeper midfield areas, and you could argue that he's exactly what United have been missing from their midfield this season.

Should United decide to recall Garner, it could be a repeat which is scarcely similar to what happened with Marcus Rashford in 2016 - a young player coming to save the club from a humiliating season. He was sensational for Louis van Gaal, and Garner could have a similar impact for Rangnick if he's brought into the senior first-team.

It feels like United's current set-up needs a new face, and based on what we saw on Sunday evening, Garner could be that man.
