Ralf Rangnick annoyed with Manchester United tactical mistake

Ralf Rangnick was 'annoyed' with Manchester United's regression that contributed to Young Boys' equaliser in their Champions League draw.

Donny van de Beek played a careless pass to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fabian Rieder intercepted to hit an unsaveable shot past Dean Henderson in the 42nd minute.

Rangnick was frustrated that United dropped back when he has placed an emphasis on playing on the front foot and he saw similarities with the performances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the final 10 minutes of the first-half.

"I was fully aware it would be a little risk, not regarding the result at the end, but if we were able to compete for 90 minutes with this team," Rangnick said. "I thought the first half-hour was good, we had a few unforced errors in those first 30 minutes but at least we were able to keep them away from the goal, but we also had control of the game.

"We scored a beautiful goal, set up by Luke Shaw, perfect left-footed shot by Mason. After that, we had two great opportunities to score the second and third one, with Amad and Juan Mata. It should've been at least 2-0 up and that would have changed the level of confidence.

"And in the last 10 minutes of the first-half we played more or less like the team played in the weeks before. We were less proactive, we were dropping back too far.

"What annoyed me most was the way we played to the pressing first line. So we sent quite a few pressing invitations to them, including the goal we conceded. We had the chance to not only clear the ball but play the ball forward twice but we didn't. They had the opportunity to score the equaliser.

"I told them that before the game but still they played in that situation a five-metre pass and they were just waiting for the ball. It was more or less a pressing imitation.

"In the second-half it was different in regards to energy level. Quite a few of the experienced players hadn't had that much game-time in the past and, for the young players, it was the first time at Old Trafford at Champions League level and this was obvious."
