Ralf Rangnick agrees with Bruno Fernandes about Manchester United youngster

When Manchester United began their search for an interim manager, they wanted to build upon the solid foundations that had been left by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rather than rip them up and start again.

Ralf Rangnick has been allowed to make any changes he sees fit to backroom staff, training routines, and with regards to selecting his team, but much of his work has been to enhance work which had already been attempted by his predecessor.

In the wake of Solskjaer's exit, it was easy to focus on the negatives given how one-dimensional and limited United had become under his guidance, but the Norwegian also deserved credit for instilling a sense of rejuvenated pride around the club, particularly with regard to his commitment towards youth development.

Rangnick has established a reputation as a nurturer of young talent, and it hasn't taken long for him to showcase it at United, adding seven players to the Uefa B-List last week and handing three academy graduates their senior debuts in the match.

Most encouragingly, the German's use of young players does not come across as a token gesture, with the experienced coach even taking time to stay behind at Carrington last week to coach the teenagers ahead of their night in the senior spotlight.

Time will tell if any of those added to the B-List for the Young Boys match will have a successful long-term future at the club, but it seems likely that teenage forward Anthony Elanga will.

The Swede made his breakthrough under Solskjaer earlier in the year, making his Premier League debut against Leicester back in May, before netting his first professional goal a week later on the final day of the season against Wolves.

Elanga, 19, had already been rewarded with a new contract in March after an impressive campaign at youth level and only nine months after signing the long-term deal, he is now set to pen another extension to match his growing stature in the men's game.

Rangnick is a huge fan of the Swedish forward, and like Solskjaer, has been hugely impressed with his work ethic and attitude despite being at an awkward crossroads in his career.

Elanga has played for the first-team, scored seven international goals for Sweden U21s and attracted serious loan interest in the summer window, yet he is still on the fringes of regular football after quickly outgrowing the safety bubble of academy football.

It would have been quite easy for the teenager to establish an ego complex after his first taste of stardom, but instead he has remained level-headed throughout, earning the respect of coaches and senior players alike.

Bruno Fernandes is one of his biggest advocates and has praised Elanga for his attitude and maturity at such a young age, while he is also viewed as a relatable role model for the latest batch of youngsters who view him as the perfect template for their own development.

The elephant in the room remains that of restricted playing time, but, with Anthony Martial set to leave next month and a new contract on the table, Elanga is well aware of the faith that the club, senior players and their new manager have in him.
