Ralf Rangnick has praised Anthony Elanga for his starring role against Aston Villa but remained coy when asked if the youngster was now ahead of Jadon Sancho in the Manchester United pecking order.
Elanga, 19, got a surprise start at Villa Park on Saturday night in the absence of injured duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.
Sancho also returned to the squad having missed the FA Cup win over the same opponents at the start of the week, though it was Elanga who started ahead of him.
"He did well," Rangnick told Sky Sports when asked to assess the teenager's performance.
"He had two great opportunities himself to score. He showed what I expected him to show and why I decided to play him from the start."
When asked why the Swede had started the match instead of more senior options, Rangnick referred to United's packed fixture schedule for the decision and insisted they would all get a chance in the weeks ahead.
He added: "We have got so many games to play, I am not thinking about who is ahead of who. It was today the decision to play him from the start but as I said, we have got so many games coming up, it could be different in the next game."
