The Election Commission on Thursday announced that byelections for two Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant earlier this year due to the death of the sitting MPs would be held on August 24.

One seat each in Uttar Pradesh and Kerala fell vacant on March 27 and May 28 respectively after the death of Beni Prasad Verma and M.P. Veerendra Kumar. The EC decided to hold the polling and counting on August 24, a statement said.

Candidates can file nominations from August 6 till August 13, followed by scrutiny of nominations on August 14 and last date for withdrawal of candidature on August 17.

“The Commission has also directed the Chief Secretaries concerned to depute a senior officer from the State to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the elections,” the statement said.

The EC also announced that the by-poll for one seat in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council would be held on August 24. The seat had fallen vacant when Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao resigned on July 1. Members of the AP Assembly will vote in the by-poll on August 24 and the result will be declared on the same day, as per the schedule.
