Rajasthan: University exams deferred, markets to remain closed on Sunday

JAIPUR: University exams across the state have been postponed and all markets in the city will remain closed on Sunday because of REET exam.

Higher education minister Bhanwar Singh Bhati on Wednesday announced that university exams from September 25 to 27 will be postponed. The decision was taken as commuting a day before and after the REET exam will be difficult for the university students.

Universities in the state have been asked to decide on a date on which exams can be conducted again. Around 20,000 university students across Rajasthan will be affected by the decision.

More than 20 lakh students will write the REET exam on September 26. Considering the number of students to be present in the city for REET exam, the traders’ associations in Jaipur have decided to keep the markets shut on Sunday.

Subhash Goyal, president of Jaipur Vyapaar Mahasangh said that Jaipur collector requested them to keep the markets shut. “We understand the administration’s concerns. Already, there is a fear of law-and-order problem. So, we have decided to keep the markets shut to save traffic problems. Shops for essential commodities, including vegetable, dairy, medical and grocery will remain open for the convenience of people.”

Earlier in the day, Chief minister Ashok Gehlot appealed to all political parties, social organisations and people to cooperate with the administration and candidates in maintaining law the order.

The chief minister appealed to people not to spread rumours. “Successful conduct of REET is the responsibility of all of us for the bright future of the youth,” he said.

Free travel of candidates in general and semi-deluxe buses has been provided from September 22 to October 9. Candidates would have to produce exam passes and would be allowed to take connecting buses in case single destination buses are not available. The facility is not available for deluxe/sleeper/AC/luxury buses.
