Rajasthan: Stones pelted at Dalit groom’s procession despite cop presence

KOTA: Three people sustained injuries after unidentified miscreants pelted stones at the wedding procession of a 23-year-old Dalit groom in presence of police officials in Guradiyabharta village under Bhawani Mandi police station of Jhalawar district on Wednesday night.

However, the victim’s family did not file any complaint and no case was lodged in the matter.

The grandfather of the groom, Kamlesh Meghwal, an armyman deployed in Siliguri, had earlier informed the Jhalawar SP anticipating some untoward incident as mounting on a mare and taking out wedding procession was still restricted for a Dalit groom in his village.

A police team, led by the SHO of Bhawani Mandi, Mahaveer Singh Yadav, was deployed in the village at the time of the wedding procession.

However, some unidentified miscreants pelted stones at the procession leaving one of the groom’s friends, Rajesh, and two others injured.

The police had reached the village around one-and-a-half hours before the scheduled time and there was no environment of protest in the village as people from all sections of society greeted the groom with flowers, Yadav said on Friday.

He said when the wedding procession was about to complete its round, some unidentified miscreant pelted a stone at the procession that left one of the friends of the groom with a head injury, however, the police instantly carried out a manhunt, but no one was found, he said.

The groom’s wedding solemnised the next day peacefully, he added.
