JAISALMER: The wildlife enthusiasts in the desert district have sighted a rare Egyptian vulture with a tag. Two such vultures have come to India from Uzbekistan of which one is visiting Jaisalmer.
Bird and environment expert Parth Jagani said that many foreign migratory birds are sighted in the forest areas of the district. In 2021, scientist Vladimir Dobrav from the Bulgarian society for protection of birds’ along with Oriental bird club and Hawk conservancy trust programme radio tagged three Egyptian vultures from Kyzylkum desert in Uzbekistan and started studying them.
Two of the vultures, Aanya and Aarya travelled thousands of kilometres to reach India. Aanya covering 2300 kms flew over Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan before reaching Sheo area in the district. The other vulture, Aarya covering 1500 kms flew over Afghanistan and Pakistan.
She finally landed at the Bhadariya pasture lands to feed over dead cattle. Local environmentalist Radheyshyam Pemani said that various species of migratory vultures come to the Lathi area and feel safe at Bhadariya pasture lands.
