Rajasthan: IMA calls off strike, few doctors to continue boycott

JAIPUR: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called off the boycott of work in the state as they were satisfied with the action taken by the government on their demands. However, a faction of doctors has decided to continue the protest. Three doctors sat on a hunger strike in the city on Sunday.

IMA state president Dr Ashok Sharda said, "We have called off our boycott of work. A lot of doctors have returned to work. We are satisfied with the action taken by the state government on the matter of Dr Archana Sharma’s suicide case. We demanded the safety and security of Dr Sharma’s family. Also, the government has fulfilled the demand not to level charges of murder against doctors and register an FIR under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Also, Rajasthan Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2008, has been implemented in the state," said Dr Sharda.

He said all doctors associated with IMA will beign work on Monday.

Meanwhile, another faction of agitating doctors decided to continue their strike at private hospitals in Jaipur, including shutting down emergency services to seek justice for Dr Archana Sharma, who committed suicide on Tuesday after she faced charges of murder in a case of death of a woman in her hospital in Lalsot of Dausa district. Even government hospital doctors have decided to boycott work apart from emergency services. A general body meeting of the protesting doctors was organised on Sunday afternoon at the Jaipur Medical Association wherein the doctors discussed the demands after meeting the state government officials.

"We are not satisfied with the action government has taken so far. Our strike will continue. Three doctors have sat on hunger strike," said, Dr Vijay Kapoor, secretary of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes (PHNHS). He said the strike will continue and they will meet at the JMA. Dr Kapoor said, "Some miscreants in the Shastri Nagar area vandalised Gupta Hospital."
