Rajasthan: Brace for longer heat wave this summer, says IMD

JAIPUR: Get ready for a scorching summer with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi, forecasting heat wave conditions in northern India with Rajasthan likely to get an extended heat spell.

Many districts in western Rajasthan are likely to witness heat wave conditions from mid-March onwards. Also places like Churu and Phalodi are likely to record temperatures of 50°C and above.

According to Jaipur Met office, a ‘heat wave’ is declared when the maximum temperature is more than 40°C and almost 4 degrees above normal maximum temperatures.

Weathermen said heat wave conditions in Rajasthan are going to prevail for much longer period. “Usually in Rajasthan, heat wave conditions is witnessed during mid-April. But this year heat wave conditions are likely to start from the last week of March in western Rajasthan and spread across the state from the first week of April,” said an officer with Jaipur Met office while quoting the forecast released by IMD, Delhi. It further stated that some places including Churu, Phalodi and Bikaner are likely to witness a maximum temperature of 50°C or above in summer.
