Raith Rovers 0, Ayr United 0 as Honest Men claim vital point at Stark's Park

Ayr United earned a hard-fought point in Kirkcaldy as they prepare to begin life under a new boss at Somerset Park.

Interim manager Davie White saw his troops deliver their second clean sheet in a row under his leadership as a wide open game in Fife remarkably ended goalless.

United had to ride periods of sustained pressure against an impressive Raith side who looked well worthy of their second place in the Championship.

But Ayr contributed plenty to a contest that offered much and could even have grabbed all three points for themselves.

White had largely struck with the team that looked transformed at Cappielow on Saturday, with Michael Moffat the only tactical switch in place of Mark McKenzie.

And Ayr could and probably should have been in front with the game just three minutes old.

Moffat led a sharp United break and fed Luke McCowan bursting into the box but his effort was tame and drifted wide of Jamie MacDonald's upright.

In a bright opening, Rovers looked to take the game to Ayr at every opportunity and Manny Duku screwed a good chance wide when played in 12 yards out.

And Brad Spencer was next to go close for the hosts after playing a neat one-two on the edge of the box before lashing his drive against the side netting.

Then Viljami Sinisalo was called into action to keep United level as the Finn flew to his left to parry a Duku header with Raith looking menacing.

The game was anyone's in the early going and a lightning quick Ayr counter almost brought its rewards when Kyle Benedictus had to clear a Cammy Smith cross from under his own bar.

Ayr continued to offer a growing threat on the break as the half wore on and they were inches from taking the lead on 35 minutes when a Smith effort was deflected just wide.

At the other end, Raith offered a reminder of their own danger when Ross Matthews fired across the face of Sinisalo's goal after great work to evade the Ayr defence.

Both sides began the second half with the same attacking intent and Raith looked in the mood to break the deadlock by trying to test Sinisalo at every opportunity.

Reghan Tumilty fired straight down the keeper's throat from 20 yards before Kai Kennedy curled an effort just wide as the hosts looked the part.

The pressure enforced a tactical switch from the Ayhr bench and White sent on Joe Chalmers in place of Moffat, with Smith moving up front.

But still Raith poured forward and sub Gozie Ugwu forced a smart save from Sinisalo with a low header which was turned wide at the nearpost.

Ayr almost delivered the ultimate sucker punch at the other end when a brilliant move saw sub Mikey Miller feed Walsh and his cutback found Smith who just couldn't get his shot away in time.

Raith threw everything at trying to get a winner from there but United's defence held firm.

And Ayr could have won it in stoppage time when Walsh found himself free in the box but sent his shot straight at MacDonald who denied United a dramatic three points.
