As the heatwave continues, an uchimizu event -- a custom to sprinkle water on the ground to cool the pavement -- took place in the Marunouchi office district of Tokyo on Friday.
The practice started in 2005 to raise environmental awareness and to promote interactions between those who work around Tokyo Station. In previous years, about 1,000 people participated in the event but because of the coronavirus crisis, that number was reduced to 50 participants. The event was divided into a morning, noon and afternoon session.
The temperature was 30.3 C at 8 a.m. in central Tokyo. The participants stood 2 meters apart to maintain social distance and used a ladle to sprinkle water on the ground, creating a brief moment of coolness.
