RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh government shifted Raipur senior superintendent of police (SSP) late on Sunday night within hours after a group of right-wing activists stormed into a police station and thrashed a Christian pastor accusing him of carrying out the religious conversion.
Raipur SSP Ajay Yadav, a 2004 batch IPS officer, was shifted to the police headquarters. Prashant Kumar Agrawal, who is the present superintendent of Durg district, will replace him.
Reports said chief minister Bhupesh Baghel took serious note of the incident of miscreants forcing their entry into Purani Basti police station to assault the pastor, who was brought there following complaints from certain people that a group was trying to encourage religious conversion in Bhatagon area.
A group of right-wing activists reached the police station shortly after and thrashed the pastor inside the station-incharge’s room while someone among them filmed the action and circulated it on the social media.
Police have filed a case against seven persons in connection with the assault but none of them were apprehended till late night.
Taking serious note of the incident, chief minister Bhupesh Baghel reportedly had a word with senior officials late in the night over the law and order situation. Subsequently, transfer orders followed.
Recently, there have been some incidents of attack on Christians at many places, including in the tribal areas, during Sunday prayers alleging religious conversions. The main opposition BJP, too, has been raising the issue of alleged religious conversion.
