The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for caution against landslides and flooding as heavy rains are expected in western and northern Japan through Monday, a day after the agency announced that the rainy season is likely to have already gotten off to an exceptionally early start in the Kinki and Tokai regions on Sunday.

The rainy season arrived 21 days earlier than average and 25 days earlier than last year in the regions. It was the earliest start of the rainy season in the Kinki region since the statistic started being tracked in 1951, while it was the second earliest start on record in the Tokai region.

On Sunday, umbrella-toting parkgoers undeterred by the drizzle could be seen at Ogimachi Park in Kita Ward, Osaka City, taking photos of the dew-specked hydrangea blossoms of the season.
