Rainbow flags put up across Nottingham to mark day homosexuality stopped being classed as a mental illness

A number of organisations across Nottinghamshire will be flying a rainbow flag to mark the day homosexuality stopped being classed as a mental illness by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The brightly coloured flag, which symbolises LGBTQIA pride movements, is flying high above Old Market Square on the council house throughout May 17 as part of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

It was created in 2004 to raise awareness for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people, plus all other people with diverse gender identities, and the discrimination and violence they still face to this day.

WHO declassified homosexuality on May 17, 1990, and the day commemorates this major landmark change.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will also be flying the symbolic flag at all stations, the headquarters in Arnold and the service development centre in Ollerton.

A service spokesman said: "Today we are celebrating International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia by raising the rainbow flag and displaying supporting banners at all stations, HQ and the Service Development Centre."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue was just one of three fire services to be featured in Stonewall's most inclusive employers top 100 list in January.

Gedling Borough Council also tweeted it would be flying the rainbow flag.
