Rainbow crossings to appear on roads in North Somerset

Rainbow crossings could soon appear at locations across North Somerset.

North Somerset Council is looking at locations to install the colourful crossings across the district as part of moves to support the LGBTQ+ community and national health initiatives.

Rainbow crossings have been implemented successfully elsewhere in the UK - particularly in London.

The council is developing a policy to ensure their safe and appropriate use in North Somerset.

The crossings will be carefully designed to ensure they’re safe and not confusing for road users and will be implemented at locations where traffic speeds are low.

Locations for the crossings have yet to be decided.

North Somerset Council's executive member for Neighbourhoods and Community service Councillor Mike Solomon said: "This is an exciting scheme that forms part of a broader placemaking and wayfinding initiative.

"As a council we are committed to supporting our LGBTQ+ community and this is a great way to do it.

"The crossings will also be an attractive fun addition to our town centres and will be introduced in carefully chosen locations.

"We hope to see our streets brightened later this year."

The news comes after it was announced that a rainbow crossing will appear in the centre of Bristol this year ahead of the city's Pride festival.

The crossing will be painted on Wine Street in Broadmead which leads to Castle Park, where a Bristol Pride Day event will be held on 10 July.

The festival was delayed in 2020 due to the pandemic and will feature a range of events across Bristol from July 3-16.
