Rain weather warnings extended as North East gets ready for second day of downpours

Weather warnings for the North East have been extended and upgraded as yet more rain is forecast for Thursday.

A yellow weather warning for rain, which covers the North East, was originally issued between midnight on Wednesday and 12pm on Thursday.

But now the warning has been extended to last until 3pm on Thursday.

Forecasters say flooding is possible as well as travel disruption and delays.

In the Scottish borders, an amber weather warning is in place, warning of likely flooding, road closures and power cuts.

This more serious warning will also last until 3pm on Thursday.

After near-constant rainfall throughout Wednesday, further heavy rain will develop in the evening and overnight.

This is expected to gradually ease on Thursday morning.

The Met Office has predicted that 30 to 50mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely.

Over higher ground in northern Northumberland, 80 to 100mm rain may fall in a few places.

Met Office meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “Anywhere within the warning area there is a risk that, with persistent rainfall, there could be a localised impact in terms of flooding.

“Tomorrow unfortunately is another wet day.”

Going into the weekend, the wind direction is expected to change, meaning less heavy and persistent rain, although the weather will still be unsettled with some showers expected, Ms Diamond said.

It is set to turn much drier for Friday and Saturday with bright or sunny spells and chance of showers, and feeling warmer than of late.
