Rain spell likely to last 5 days, Gurugram hit by outages

GURUGRAM: The city is likely to witness rain and thunderstorms over the next five to six days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Wednesday, several parts of the city received showers for the second consecutive day. Till 8am, 2mm rainfall was recorded in the city. According to IMD, there is the possibility of a severe thunderstorm with maximum surface wind speed 62-87kmph moving towards the region that will result in rainfall for the next five days. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 30.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 26.1 degrees Celsius.

Karnal in Haryana recorded 245mm rain till 8.30 am on Wednesday, according to IMD data. “This is the highest ever 24 hours rainfall recorded in the month of July. Previous record was 242mm on July 15, 1968. The present cycle which is delivering rain is due to monsoon. However, only scanty rainfall was recorded during the day in the city,” said meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya.

Even though the weather was pleasant, many areas witnessed power cuts after rain. Residents pointed out that life without electricity at home was miserable. “As we are working from home, it is difficult to work without power,” said Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Palam Vihar. Another resident, Mira Verma, said, “This is the same story every year. Residents forced to live without electricity in Gurugram. The government has nothing to offer. Even though the weather is nice, we still need power at home.”

A Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) official said, “The ownership of many areas lies with the developer. They need to upgrade the infrastructure to check power cut during rains.”

Meanwhile, parts of Delhi recorded the first ‘heavy’ spell of rain this monsoon season . The day’s highest precipitation was logged in the Ridge area with 107.4mm of rainfall from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Safdarjung, which is the city’s base station, recorded a rainfall of 28.5mm till 8.30am on Wednesday and 26.1mm from 8.30am to 5.30pm. The stations at Najafgarh, Lodhi Road, Sports Complex and Mayur Vihar received, respectively, 62.5mm, 25mm, 17.5mm and 14.5mm of rain from 8.30am to 5.30pm.
