GURUGRAM: While the heavy downpour caused waterlogging in several areas, the timely deployment of cops prevented traffic jams in the city on the first day of the monsoon showers. Sporting long boots and donning white raincoats, nearly 1,100 cops helped commuters across Gurugram to prevent any inconvenience.
On the other hand, as many as 17 senior officials, including sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) and regional transport authorities, were deployed by Gurugram’s deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav for monitoring waterlogging issues and ensuring proper drainage.
In addition, two quick response teams (QRTs) were formed under the supervision of DCP (traffic) Ravinder Tomar and towing cranes were made available at some places to ensure smooth flow of traffic. The police also tracked waterlogged points from the GMDA control and command centre in the city.
“The water drainage pumps were of high power because of which we were able to drain out the water fast. The local administration, along with the traffic police, ensured that the commuters didn’t face any problem,” the DCP (traffic) said. Though the police ensured that the movement of traffic was unaffected, there were minor congestions in areas including Iffco Chowk, NH-48 flyover, Basai Chowk, Sector 4/5, Hanuman Chowk and South City 1.
However, there were no reports of any waterlogging in underpasses across the city. The police control rooms also received calls from residents and commuters seeking help. CCTV cameras installed by the GMDA helped expedite the work of the traffic cops by sharing real-time data with them.
“There were minor instances of congestion but they were quickly cleared. However, on the Delhi-Gurugram border, there was some pressure due to traffic congestion on the Delhi side. Largely, there were no tailbacks,” said DCP Tomar.
