Rain expected across the Hunter as low pressure system tracks south

ON ITS WAY: A rain radar image from Saturday afternoon.

RAIN is expected to soak the Lower Hunter over the next 24 hours as a low pressure system tracks south from northern NSW.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting falls of between 20 to 35 mm in Newcastle, 15 to 25 mm in Maitland and 15 to 20 mm in Singleton.

Light rain started falling over some areas of the region on Saturday.

Parts of the state's far north coast and south-east Queensland had more than 50mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday, and were experiencing similar rainfall throughout the day.

The BOM said a low pressure system had developed off south-east Queensland on Friday night.

"Rain and moderate to heavy falls are possible on the southern side of the low ... shifting further to the south on Sunday," BOM meteorologist Diana Eadie said.

A strong wind warning has been issued for the Hunter Coast and other coastal areas of NSW on Sunday.

The conditions are expected to produce big seas and swell which will likely peak on Monday.

A northeasterly swell between 2 and 2.5 metres is predicted for the Hunter Coast on Sunday morning, tending easterly between 2.5 and 3 metres about midday.

"Large waves and gusty winds may begin to impact parts of the NSW coast," Ms Eadie said.

"These waves are of particular concern as there is some risk they could impact vulnerable parts of the Central Coast and cause additional coastal erosion."

Newcastle council had been working to secure eroded sections of Stockton beach throughout this week ahead of the forecast conditions.

It was a similar scene at Wamberal on the Central Coast where homes came under threat last weekend.
