Rain has delayed the start of the WBBL season opener between the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars in Hobart.

The match was due to begin at 7:40pm (AEDT) on Thursday at Blundstone Arena but the 'bat flip' has been delayed.

The fixture is the first of 22 games to be hosted in Tasmania before matches move to Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia.

The Sixers are skippered by star allrounder Ellyse Perry, who is likely to shuffle down the order with the squad undergoing a revamp.

The Stars, runners-up last season, have picked up Irish allrounder Kim Garth for the competition's seventh edition.
